FIBA lifts individual bans on Russian basketball personnel, but team return remains distant

The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has made the first move to ease sanctions against Russian basketball since sports bans were imposed. Individual bans against Russian athletes, coaches and referees have been lifted. However, this only applies at the individual level, while national teams and clubs still show no sign of returning to the international arena. The head of the Russian Basketball Federation made notable comments after the decision. She expressed caution, not hiding her delight that individual restrictions have been removed, but at the same time stressed that the return of Russian clubs to the EuroLeague remains a distant prospect. "Any move of this kind naturally makes us happy, but we cannot say that we have started packing our bags for the EuroLeague right away. That some restrictions are being lifted is already something to be grateful for," she said. According to the official, FIBA's move at the individual level is a sign that opposition to bringing politics into sport is growing. She stressed that politically motivated bans on Russian athletes are wrong and unfair. She also hopes that international sports officials are beginning to understand this and will take appropriate steps. However, many obstacles still remain. The official pointed out that lifting the ban on paper does not mean that Russian teams can immediately reintegrate. "If flights have not been resumed and logistics restrictions remain, our participation is almost impossible," she added. This shows that logistics and travel issues remain the biggest barriers, even after sanctions have been eased. A key point made by the Russian basketball chief was the strategy of a gradual return. She admitted that if Russia returned too quickly, the international sports community would push back. "I think our return is happening in small steps, because there will be people who protest against a rapid return. Therefore, this is probably the right approach. You cannot do everything abruptly. In general, we are still moving forward, although minimal, regarding our participation in the EuroLeague," she concluded. Analysts believe FIBA's decision shows a shift in how international sports bodies approach the Russia issue. Lifting bans on individuals rather than on entire teams could be a probing step designed to reduce political tension. But for Russian basketball fans, this remains a long and challenging process, and the EuroLeague is probably still a distant dream.
